Reassessment

What

Reassessment is for institutions which have held the full Investor in Careers award for three years. It focuses on maintaining the IiC standard and improving provision through ongoing review and evaluation. Successful organisations will be given the award for a further three years following successful reassessment.

When

Organising your reassessment visit

  • Contact your local support coordinator about the reassessment process 3 months prior to the expiry of your original award; the coordinator will provide you with further details
  • Identify possible dates which will give you adequate time to assemble your evidence and check the availability of key staff and students
  • Make contact with your assessor at least a fortnight before the assessment date to agree the programme for the reassessment visit.
  • Brief staff, pupils and others who will be involved in the reassessment and publish the programme for the whole school’s information.

How

In order to be ready you will need to ensure that your school/college formally renews its commitment to IiC. You will also need to ensure that:

  • Your policy and other key documents (development plan, partnership agreements, staff development plan etc.) are up-to-date and reflect the learning outcomes of the National Framework for CEG, 11-19;
  • Your CEG programme is delivered to all students and that you have a delivery plan that shows how this will be done and your provision will be evaluated;
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships in support of effective CEG.
    • Demonstrate your school/college’s commitment to continuous improvement in CEG through systematic evaluation, consultation with students and external organisations, innovative thinking and staff development.
    • Select one aspect of your CEG programme to demonstrate your commitment to excellence. This will then form the focus for a structured discussion with the assessor. There is no panel presentation as part of the reassessment process.

You are not required to produce a portfolio but you will need to collect the evidence above so that the assessor is clear about what you are claiming. Most schools therefore put together a folder of relevant items. These can be a selection of working documents.

The reassessment visit takes a whole day. In addition to looking at the evidence described above, the assessor will also wish to speak to a cross section of people involved. This typically includes:

  • Head teacher/Principal/Directors
  • Senior leaders and managers
  • Governor/Board member
  • Staff member with lead responsibility for CEG
  • Other delivery staff
  • Tutors
  • At least two representative groups of young people
  • Personal Adviser

Ten Top Tips for IiC Reassessment (Thoughts from a successfully reassessed school)

  1. Get to grips with the outcomes before you start – what do they mean; what is required?
  2. Set yourself a deadline to collect and to collate your evidence – add some time on!
  3. Get your colleagues and students on your side – what are the benefits?
  4. Ensure you have senior management support - consider setting up a working group
  5. It will take less time than the original process but planning/organisation is still important
  6. Use the External Assessor’s original report and your evaluation findings as your starting point – how have you tackled the areas for development?
  7. Write a clear introduction to your evidence outlining the major changes in the last 3 years and the rationale for your reassessment evidence
  8. Visit other learning providers who have gone through the process
  9. Make use of your local expert(s)
  10. Go for it – it’s easier second time round!
